Fish are spreading out

Two great things I've noticed this week: the fish are spreading out and theres rain today and tomorrow. I fished downstream of the Harris st river st bridge yesterday, WELL below the the big turn. Caught a healthy 16" rainbow subsurface (pictured). Nothing rising but still tons of caddis coming off. Got more takes even further downstream. With the rain, the fish will probably even spread out more, which is ideal for a long summer of fishing. Get those healthy stockies to spread out early and find the holding areas and feeding zones. Then it's up to you and me to find them. Its not as easy as throwing bait off a bridge.

Right now flows are at ~50 CFS and still climbing from the sub 40 it was earlier this week. I've always said I love this river at just under 100. Well see if the rain can get us there.

  1. Hello Nick,
Nice Bow! Glad to hear you had a good evening. Managed one Brown on top below the cable late yesterday afternoon and soaked to the bone tonight. Once again, thanks for the Blog and it was a pleasure speaking with you the other night. Looking forward to future reports.

  2. Thanks Pete, it was nice meeting you as well. I'm planning on trying the lower river rd stretch this evening (upstream from road closure, long rock wall area). Very recent good reports from that stretch.

  3. So its been stocked, even though it has not been posted yet. Which is fine with me, I never understood why they posted it anyways. But upside I did get my license checked which was encouraging. But theve been put off by all the worm chuckers so well see.

  4. What day were you there Nathan? I was there last Thursday. Fished from the bottom of the hill on River Rd (lower closed section) down to where the rock wall lines the rail trail. Caught a nice brown and two brookies. It is nice that they are checking licenses.

  5. I was there that monday, i was wondering if you know if the quinnie is a major river. If it is consider a major river the limit is 2 fish. I would to see a ticket for too many fish. Had some luck on black nymphs about a foot under the surface. Also by the pump house they were chasing streamers. Hope this rain will push alot down stream.

  6. Brown, rainbows and brookies active this morning. Pretty small but still fun. The trout limit in MA is 3/day. Good luck! http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/regulations/plain_language/taking_fish.htm

  7. Sandro is half right. The Brook/Brown/Rainbow trout limit on MAJOR RIVERS is 3/day with no minimum length. Unfortunately, the Quinnie is NOT considered a MAJOR RIVER. If anyone knows what the qualifications of a major river are, please share. Because I'd love to know what makes the Stillwater, East Branch of the Ware, and Nissitissit rivers a major river and not the quinnie. It makes no sense and is one of the reasons why fishing is so scarce come summer/fall, unless you know where to go. I will say though, that even on the rivers that have a 3 fish limit I still see people taking 5+ fish, so rules are no good unless people follow them. Wonder if there is anything we can do to upgrade the Q's river status????

    1. NC, nice blog! I'll just call DCR and find out. The following site does list it as a major river but I'll see what the rangers say.
